い-Adjective Conjugation

Past, negative, and past-negative for い-adjectives.

Context

Describing the past

Imagine you went to a restaurant last night. You want to tell your friend about the experience. You might say, 'The food was delicious, but the service wasn't good.'

In Japanese, adjectives change their form depending on whether you are talking about the present or the past, and whether the statement is positive or negative. Mastering these patterns allows you to express your opinions and experiences accurately.
Explanation

The い-Adjective Formula

To conjugate an い-adjective, you modify the final 'い' (i).

Adjective-いSuffix
For the negative form, remove the final 'い' and add 'くない'. For the past form, remove the final 'い' and add 'かった'. For the past-negative, remove the final 'い' and add 'くなかった'.

Watch out

The adjective 'いい' (good) is an exception. When conjugating, it uses the stem 'よ' (yo). So, negative is 'よくない', and past is 'よかった'.

Usage

Nuance and Politeness

These forms are standard for polite conversation.

When speaking politely, you add 'です' at the end of the conjugated adjective. In casual speech, you simply drop the 'です'.

Which sentence is more polite?

  • 暑い。
  • 暑いです。

Adding 'です' makes the sentence polite (desu/masu form).

Deep dive

Deep Dive: The 'i' stem

Understanding why we drop the 'i'.

In Japanese grammar, the 'い' at the end of these adjectives functions similarly to a verb ending. By removing it, you are creating a 'stem' that can accept different suffixes to change the tense or polarity of the word.
