Mini-Dialogue: Time Relationships

A practical review of N2 time-related grammar points (うちに, 間に, 最中, 次第) through a workplace dialogue.

Context

A Busy Afternoon

You are working in a Japanese office. Your colleague, Tanaka-san, is rushing to finish a report before a meeting. This dialogue demonstrates how to naturally weave together the time-relationship structures you have studied.

Tanaka

かいぎのじゅんび、まだおわらないよ。

会議の準備、まだ終わらないよ。

I haven't finished the meeting prep yet.

You

てつだいましょうか?

手伝いましょうか?

Shall I help you?

Tanaka

ありがとう。じゃあ、わたしがしりょうをコピーしているさいちゅうに、メールをおくってくれる?

ありがとう。じゃあ、私が資料をコピーしている最中に、メールを送ってくれる?

Thanks. While I'm in the middle of copying the documents, could you send the email?

You

わかりました。もどりしだい、すぐやります。

わかりました。戻り次第、すぐやります。

Understood. As soon as I get back, I'll do it.

Tanaka

たすかるよ。わすれないうちに、かいぎしつもよやくしておいてね。

助かるよ。忘れないうちに、会議室も予約しておいてね。

That helps. While you haven't forgotten, please book the meeting room too.

You

りょうかいです。ひとがいないあいだにおわらせますね。

了解です。人がいない間に終わらせますね。

Got it. I'll finish it while there's no one around.

Explanation

Grammar Recap

These four structures define how actions relate to time windows.

うちに間に最中次第
うちに implies doing something before a state changes. 間に indicates a duration where an action occurs. 最中 emphasizes being in the absolute middle of an action. 次第 means 'as soon as' or 'upon the completion of'.

Watch out

最中 (さいちゅう) is almost always used for actions that interrupt or occur during a specific, ongoing event.

Usage

Nuance and Register

Choosing the right time expression depends on your intent.

うちに vs 間に

うちに

Focuses on 'before the state changes'.

忘れないうちにメモする

間に

Focuses on 'during the duration'.

留守の間に掃除する

Which of these is most appropriate for formal business correspondence?

  • 〜している最中に
  • 〜次第
  • 〜するうちに

次第 is very common in business contexts to indicate immediate action following an event.

Deep dive

Advanced Nuance

A closer look at the constraints of these patterns.

The 'Negative' constraint of うちに

Unlike 間に, うちに often implies a sense of urgency—doing something before a situation changes for the worse or becomes impossible. For example, '若いうちに留学したい' (I want to study abroad while I am young) implies that this window is limited.
