Mini-Dialogue: Honorifics Introduction

A review of basic honorific verbs (sonkeigo) through a workplace dialogue.

Context

A Visit to the Office

You are at your company's headquarters for a meeting. A receptionist is helping you navigate the office. In Japanese business settings, using the correct honorifics is essential to show respect to superiors and clients.

Receptionist

たなかぶちょうはいらっしゃいますか。

田中部長はいらっしゃいますか。

Is Department Manager Tanaka here?

You

はい、いまかいぎしつにいらっしゃいます。

はい、今会議室にいらっしゃいます。

Yes, he is in the meeting room right now.

Receptionist

ありがとうございます。ぶちょうはおっしゃっていましたか。

ありがとうございます。部長はおっしゃっていましたか。

Thank you. Did the manager say anything?

You

はい、あとでうかがうとおっしゃっていました。

はい、後で伺うとおっしゃっていました。

Yes, he said he would visit later.

Explanation

Core Honorific Verbs

In Japanese, we use 'sonkeigo' (respectful language) to elevate the status of the person we are talking about. Two fundamental verbs are いらっしゃる and おっしゃる.

行く/来る/いるいらっしゃる
いらっしゃる is the respectful version of いる (to be), 行く (to go), and 来る (to come). It is used when referring to a superior's location or movement.
言うおっしゃる
おっしゃる is the respectful version of 言う (to say). Note that it conjugates like a regular u-verb, but the polite form is おっしゃいます.

Watch out

Never use these forms for yourself! Honorifics are strictly for the actions of others you wish to show respect toward.

Advanced Usage

Conjugation quirk

The verb おっしゃる is a special 'Godan' verb. While it ends in る, it conjugates like a regular u-verb (e.g., おっしゃいます, not おっしゃります). Keep this in mind when using it in different tenses.
