Mini-Dialogue: Expressing Intentions

A review of expressing plans, intentions, and relaying information using と思う, と言う, and ために through a real-world dialogue.

Context

Planning a Trip

In this lesson, we follow two friends, Ken and Yumi, as they discuss their upcoming weekend plans. To communicate effectively, they use structures to express what they think, what they have heard, and the purpose behind their actions.

Understanding how to express intentions and relay information is essential for making plans in Japanese. Whether you are explaining why you are studying or sharing what someone else said, these patterns are the building blocks of daily conversation.
Explanation

Core Grammar Recap

Here are the three structures used to express intentions and relay thoughts.

ためにと思うと言う
Use ために to express purpose (in order to). Use と思う to state your own opinion or intention. Use と言う to report what someone else said.

Tip

Remember that と思う and と言う require the verb to be in the plain form (short form) before the particle と.

Tense in Quotes

When using と言う, the tense inside the quote remains relative to the time the original statement was made. If someone said 'I am busy' (忙しいです), you report it as 'Tanaka-san said he is busy' (田中さんは忙しいと言いました).
