Urban Spaces and Subculture
Translation
Modern cities have been designed as homogenized, efficient spaces, but there is always a soil in the gaps where subcultures can sprout. Just as youth culture once gathered in specific districts to form its own aesthetics and language, urban space has an aspect as a cultural testing ground. However, with the standardization of streets due to redevelopment currently underway, these 'margins' are being rapidly lost. The critical spirit and challenges to existing values held by subculture are essential elements for maintaining urban vitality. Urban planning that pursues only efficiency and economic rationality may lead to the stripping away of cultural depth. The richness of a city resides in its ability to allow for unpredictable cultural collisions and intermingling, not just in its functional convenience.
