The Mirror Named Nature

Translation

Since the modern era, we humans have viewed nature only as an object to be conquered or as a resource. Advances in science and technology have made it possible to control wild nature and build artificial paradises called cities. However, in that process, have we not forgotten the fundamental fact that we ourselves are also a part of nature? For modern people living in the bustle of the city, nature is at best a stage for weekend leisure or merely the greenery of managed parks. By externalizing nature and separating it as an objective subject of observation, we have deepened our own spiritual isolation. Once, our Japanese predecessors feared nature and found the truth of 'impermanence' in its transitions. The cycles of the four seasons and the activities of flora and fauna were not merely biological phenomena, but mirrors reflecting the way of human life. The sense of stagnation and spiritual exhaustion plaguing modern society may be rooted in this severance of dialogue with nature. Placing oneself in nature is not merely rest. It is a ritual to strip away the self-image distorted through the filter of civilization and reconnect with the world as a naked existence. True environmental protection does not stop at simply reducing carbon dioxide or protecting endangered species. It is a process of escaping the narrow perspective of anthropocentrism and humbly re-examining our position as a constituent element of the vast biosphere that is Earth. Nature is by no means a docile object that we can dominate. Rather, it is a fundamental 'other' that encompasses our life and death and constantly shakes us. When we listen to its quiet questioning, perhaps we can finally find a way to truly coexist with nature.

Comprehension

According to the passage, why has modern man become spiritually isolated?

  • Because we have spent too much time in nature and lost our urban focus.
  • Because we have treated nature as an external object to be observed rather than part of ourselves.
  • Because we have failed to use science and technology to control the environment.
  • Because we have abandoned the traditional Japanese belief in impermanence.

The passage argues that by externalizing nature and viewing it as a separate object for observation, humans have deepened their own spiritual isolation.
