The Current State and Challenges of Food Loss
Translation
In Japan, food that is thrown away despite still being edible, so-called "food loss," has become a major social issue. Millions of tons of food are wasted annually, a situation that cannot be overlooked from the perspectives of global hunger and environmental impact. The primary causes include the disposal of non-standard products during the distribution process and waste within households due to consumers buying too much. Solving this problem requires not only personal awareness reform but also a review of systems by companies and local governments. Multi-faceted approaches are needed, such as educational activities to promote a correct understanding of expiration dates and the spread of food banks to effectively utilize unsold food. Re-recognizing the spirit of "mottainai" (regret over waste) and developing the habit of purchasing only what is necessary will be the first step toward realizing a sustainable society.
