Satoyama Landscapes and Humans

Translation

Satoyama, which can be called the original landscape of Japan, is not merely a natural phenomenon. Within it exists a unique ecosystem that humans have created over many years by interacting with nature. By gathering firewood, cultivating fields, and maintaining the mountains, the lives of the forest and the people have circulated gently. However, due to depopulation and aging associated with modernization, the number of Satoyama areas that no longer receive such maintenance is increasing. As human intervention ceases, places where diverse creatures once coexisted are falling into ruin and losing their original form. Perhaps protecting nature does not mean simply leaving it alone, but rather continuing to engage with it appropriately.

Comprehension

What is the author's view on the current state of Satoyama?

  • It is thriving because humans have stopped interfering.
  • It is losing its balance because human maintenance has decreased.
  • It should be left entirely to nature without human intervention.
  • It has become a perfect example of modern natural preservation.

The author argues that human intervention is necessary for the health of the Satoyama ecosystem.
