How to remember it

合 (combine) + 図 (diagram) — a combined picture that conveys a message, i.e. a signal.

Example sentences

• 先生の合図で、生徒たちは一斉に立ち上がった。

  せんせいのあいずで、せいとたちはいっせいにたちあがった。

  At the teacher's signal, the students all stood up at once.

• 彼は手で合図して、こっちに来いと言った。

  かれはてであいずして、こっちにこいといった。

  He signaled with his hand, telling me to come over.

Usage

Often used in を出す (to give a signal) or で (on/at the signal).
