外 (outside) + 出 (exit)—exiting to the outside world.

Example sentences

• 今日は一日中外出していました。

  きょうはいちにちじゅうがいしゅつしていました。

  I was out all day today.

• 熱があるので外出を控えてください。

  ねつがあるのでがいしゅつをひかえてください。

  Please refrain from going out since you have a fever.

Usage

With する it means "to go out"; contrast with 出張 (business trip).
