午 (horse-hour, around noon) + 後 (after) = the hours after noon.

Example sentences

• 午後三時に会議があります。

  ごごさんじにかいぎがあります。

  There is a meeting at 3 P.M.

• 午後は雨が降るでしょう。

  ごごはあめがふるでしょう。

  It will probably rain in the afternoon.

Usage

Write 午後X時 for P.M. times; casual speech often uses 昼 instead.
