Picture a ruler measuring "how-do" far something goes — ほど marks its limit.

Example sentences

• 泣きたいほど嬉しかった。

  なきたいほどうれしかった。

  I was so happy I could cry.

• 昨日は目が痛いほど勉強した。

  きのうはめがいたいほどべんきょうした。

  Yesterday I studied so much my eyes hurt.

Usage

Often a particle: A ほど B means "to the extent that" or "as B as A."
