How to remember it

一 (one) + 方 (direction/side) literally means "one side," hence "on the one hand / the other hand."

Example sentences

• 彼は勉強が好きだ。一方、スポーツは嫌いだ。

  かれはべんきょうがすきだ。いっぽう、すぽーつはきらいだ。

  He likes studying. On the other hand, he hates sports.

• 人口は増えている。一方で、働き手は減っている。

  じんこうはふえている。いっぽうで、はたらきてはへっている。

  The population is growing. Meanwhile, the workforce is shrinking.

Usage

Often 一方(で) to contrast two facts; can mean "while / at the same time."
