How to remember it

階 (level/stairs) counts building floors — same sound as 回 but for floors.

Example sentences

• 図書館は三階にあります。

  としょかんはさんがいにあります。

  The library is on the third floor.

• この建物は五階あります。

  このたてものはごかいあります。

  This building has five floors.

Usage

Note がい reading in 三階 (さんがい) and 何階 (なんがい); 一階 is いっかい.
