漢 (Han dynasty) + 字 (character) — the written characters borrowed from China.

Example sentences

  This kanji is difficult.

  I practice kanji every day.

Usage

Each kanji has multiple readings: 音読み (Chinese-style) and 訓読み (Japanese-style).
