聞く (listen) + える (spontaneous potential) — sound comes to be heard on its own.

Example sentences

• 声がよく聞こえます。

  こえがよくきこえます。

  The voice is clearly audible.

• 何も聞こえません。

  なにもきこえません。

  I can't hear anything.

Usage

Spontaneous verb; takes が (what is audible), not を.
