子 (child) + 供 (companion) — a child is a little companion beside you.

Example sentences

• 子供が公園で遊んでいます。

  こどもがこうえんであそんでいます。

  The children are playing in the park.

• 子供の時、日本に住んでいました。

  こどものとき、にほんにすんでいました。

  I lived in Japan when I was a child.

Usage

Same word for one or many children; also commonly written 子ども.
