間 (interval) + 違 (differ) — differing from the right path is an error.

• 駅の名前を間違えました。

  えきのなまえをまちがえました。

  I got the station name wrong.

• 鍵を間違えて、ドアが開きませんでした。

  かぎをまちがえて、どあがあきませんでした。

  I used the wrong key, so the door wouldn't open.

Usage

Transitive (を); more colloquial than the near-synonym 間違う.
