How to remember it

目 means "eye"; picture pointing an eye at each item to count its place in order.

Example sentences

• 彼は三番目に教室に入った。

  かれはさんばんめにきょうしつにはいった。

  He entered the classroom third.

• 右から二つ目のボタンを押してください。

  みぎからふたつめのぼたんをおしてください。

  Please press the second button from the right.

Usage

Attach 目 after a counter or number: 三番目, 二つ目, to mark order.
