How to remember it

乗る (ride) + 変える (change) = change what you're riding, i.e., transfer.

Example sentences

• 次の駅で山手線に乗り換えます。

  つぎのえきでやまのてせんにのりかえます。

  I'll transfer to the Yamanote Line at the next station.

• 新宿で電車を乗り換えた。

  しんじゅくででんしゃをのりかえた。

  I changed trains at Shinjuku.

Usage

Ichidan verb; takes に for the line you transfer onto.
