How to remember it

起 (rise) plus す makes someone rise — that is, you wake them up.

Example sentences

• 毎朝六時に子供を起こす。

  まいあさろくじにこどもをおこす。

  I wake my child at six every morning.

• 彼は騒ぎを起こした。

  かれはさわぎをおこした。

  He caused a commotion.

Usage

Transitive partner of 起きる; the person woken takes を.
