How to remember it

The kanji 表 shows the outward side of clothing — the face others see.

Example sentences

• 紙の表に名前を書いてください。

  かみのおもてになまえをかいてください。

  Please write your name on the front of the paper.

• 建物の表に花が咲いている。

  たてもののおもてにはながさいている。

  Flowers are blooming at the front of the building.

Usage

Opposite of 裏 (うら, back/hidden); used of faces, sides, and outsides.
