How to remember it

最 (most) + 近 (recent/near) = the most recent time, i.e. lately.

Example sentences

• 最近、日本語を勉強し始めました。

  さいきん、にほんごをべんきょうしはじめました。

  I recently started studying Japanese.

• 最近の映画は面白いですね。

  さいきんのえいがはおもしろいですね。

  Recent movies are interesting, aren't they?

Usage

Works as both a noun (最近の…) and a sentence-opening adverb.
