How to remember it

Used with negatives to blame a cause; "it's the fault of..." Usually written せい in kana.

疲れのせいでミスをしてしまった。
つかれのせいでみすをしてしまった。
I made a mistake because of fatigue.
雨のせいで試合は中止になった。
あめのせいでしあいはちゅうしになった。
The match was cancelled because of the rain.

Used as 〜のせいで to attribute blame; contrasts with the positive おかげ.
