How to remember it

祖 (ancestor) + 父 (father) = the father of your parents.

Example sentences

• 私の祖父は八十八歳です。

  わたしのそふははちじゅうはっさいです。

  My grandfather is eighty-eight years old.

• 祖父は毎日公園を散歩します。

  そふはまいにちこうえんをさんぽします。

  My grandfather walks in the park every day.

Usage

Humble/in-group term; use おじいさん for someone else's grandfather.
